What does it take to build an urban park? In 2010 we began initial conversations with Roanoke City planners and leadership about the need for improved, safe, pedestrian zones in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. Following these early conversations, we held dozens of public forums, design charrettes, and workshops.
The result was Market Square. By eliminating 25 poorly utilized parking spaces in front of the historic Farmer’s Market and the Roanoke City Market Building, we freed up approximately 15,000 square feet of urban space to accommodate an expanded Farmer’s Market and a flexible plaza that could be used for a wide variety of events and activities; from weekend street performers to annual festivals, Market Square is now one of the most vibrant parts of Downtown Roanoke.
